AMA submission supports ‘coming together’ in GP-led rural team care

The AMA has provided a submission to the consultation on rural multidisciplinary health teams: Ngayubah Gadan Consensus Statement and Guiding Paper draft.

The AMA supports general practitioner (GP) led multidisciplinary team-based care to provide rural communities with access to high quality and safe healthcare services. Supporting general practices to build multidisciplinary healthcare teams will enable them to meet patient needs and support integrated and well-coordinated care.

In its submission to the Department of Health and Aged Care, the AMA supports the principles for Rural and Remote Multidisciplinary Health (RRMH) team-based care described in the Ngayubah Gadan (coming together) Consensus Statement and Guiding Paper.

Ngayubah Gadan Consensus Statement was developed by rural health stakeholders and intended to define key elements in multidisciplinary teams in rural and regional settings. The document calls for support to the Rural and Remote Multidisciplinary Health Teams model of care in MM3-7 areas.

The multidisciplinary principle is consistent with the Strengthening Medical Taskforce Report which recommends utilising multidisciplinary care teams working to their full scope of practice to optimise use of the health workforce and deliver increased access to healthcare in rural, regional and remote areas.

To be more useful, the AMA suggests the addition of roadmaps to the paper to guide rural and remote healthcare stakeholders transitioning to a multidisciplinary healthcare team model.
