Logjammed hospitals continue to grapple with ramping crisis

Our latest Ambulance Ramping Report Card shows there is no end in sight to the crisis, while our election platform charts a course for meaningful health reform. 

Ambulance ramping in many states is still double what it was five years ago, our latest report card reveals.  

The AMA’s Ambulance Ramping Report Card was released on Thursday, and it shows patients are still waiting far too long to be admitted at logjammed hospitals.  

In some states, the total hours ramped has more than doubled in the past five years.  

AMA President Dr Danielle McMullen said the human and financial costs of this blow could not be ignored.  

“Our hospitals have been struggling since before the COVID-19 pandemic. While the federal government recently locked in some welcome additional funding for public hospitals, whoever wins government must expedite a new National Health Reform Agreement,” Dr McMullen said.  

This week, the AMA also released its 2025 federal election platform, calling for immediate action to Modernise Medicare and lift our public hospitals out of logjam.  

The platform also outlines measures needed to address growing threats to private health sector sustainability and tackling the nation’s chronic disease rates by implementing a sugar tax.
