Updated AMA Fees List has been released

AMA Members are advised that the updated Fees List has been released and remaining MBS changes from 1 November 2021 are under review and will be included in the next update.

AMA Members are advised that the AMA Fees List has now been updated.

This update finalises the changes to the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) that came into effect on 1 July 2021 with amendments to General Surgery services and 1 November 2021 minor amendments to Orthopaedic services following the restructure of the group on 1 July 2021.

The remaining MBS changes, effective 1 November 2021, are under review and will be included in the next available update. 

The following changes were made to the AMA Fees List and the update is available on the Fees List website, PDF and CSV files: 

There are changes to 158 General Surgery MBS items including:  

• 35 new items; 
• 50 amended items; and 
• 73 deleted items.  

  The General Surgery MBS item changes pertain to:  

• Laparoscopy and Laparotomy;  
• Small Bowel Resection;  
• Abdominal Wall Hernias;  
• Oesophageal; 
• Stomach;   
• Liver; 
• Biliary;  
• Pancreas; 
• Spleen; 
• Oncology;  
• Lymph Nodes; 
• Excisions; and  
• Bariatric surgery.  

These changes are a result of the MBS Review Taskforce recommendations. Further information is available on MBS Online here 

The 1 November 2021 MBS amendments to Orthopaedics services include: 

• 26 minor administrative amendments. 

MBS changes NOT reflected in the AMA Fees List 

The AMA Fees List will not reflect changes to the following services amended or included in the MBS between June and October 2021: 

• Flag-Fall Arrangements for COVID-19 Vaccine Suitability Assessment Services; 
• In-Depth Patient Assessment for a COVID-19 Vaccine; 
• Claiming Microbiology Tests for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19); 
• Cardiac Surgical Services;  
• Ophthalmology - for Paracentesis of Anterior Chamber or Vitreous Cavity; 
• Heart Health Assessment; 
• Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair; 
• Support for People in COVID-19 Hotspots; 
• Temporary Nicotine and Smoking Cessation Counselling;  
• COVID-19 Vaccine Suitability Assessment Service; 
• COVID-19 Temporary MBS Telehealth Services; 
• Temporary COVID-19 MBS Telehealth Services – Specialist Inpatient Services; 
• Personal Attendance for Musculoskeletal Ultrasound and Personal Supervision for Nuclear Medicine Imaging Services During COVID-19; and 
• COVID-19 Temporary MBS Allied Health Services for Residents of Aged Care Facilities. 

Please note that the four (4) new items for the provision of Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (TMVr), as recommended by the Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC), will be reviewed for inclusion in the next available Fees List update.
