Drs4Drs set to expand its service

World Mental Health Day came and went this week, but mental health challenges for many doctors remain a constant every day.

The AMA Drs4Drs service, which has been developed by the medical profession for the medical profession, is adding a new counselling service to the 1300 Dr4Drs mental health support service.

There will be more details in next week’s addition of Rounds.

Meanwhile the AMA's president Professor Steve Robson said this week he is committed to making doctors’ mental health and wellbeing a feature of his presidency and reminded doctors to seek support if need and recognise the signs of burnout and anxiety.

“We know that for doctors and medical students there is heightened awareness of potential stigma associated with mental health issues such as anxiety and depression,” Professor Robson said.

“We’re enhancing the AMA Drs4Drs service which has been developed by the medical profession for the medical profession so that every doctor in Australia can speak to a peer who understands the pressures they’re under,” he said.

The Drs4Drs 24/7 helpline is 1300 374 377 (1300 Dr4Drs). Lifeline offers 24/7 crisis support for all Australians on 13 11 44.

In addition, Doctors Health Services Pty Ltd (DrHS) also has a confidential telehealth service specifically for doctors and medical students who are struggling with their mental health.
