Latest AMA Fees List update

Members will find Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) and Thoracic Surgery services updated in the latest Fees List.

The AMA Fees List has now been updated as at 29 August 2023. This update includes changes to 201 AMA otolaryngology, head and neck surgery (OHNS), and 105 thoracic surgery services and reflects changes introduced on the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) on 1 March 2023. The MBS item changes were made to ensure alignment with current medical services and clinical practices, implement co-claiming restrictions to reduce improper claims, and enhance clarity for consistent item claiming.

The AMA OHNS item changes include 12 new items, 19 deleted items, 94 items with description amendments (including 14 fee amendments), and 76 administrative changes and these changes relate to otolaryngology diagnostic procedures; ear, nose and throat operations and head and neck surgery. The AMA thoracic surgery item changes include 10 new items, 2 deleted items, 31 descriptor amendments, and 62 administrative changes. The AMA thoracic surgery item changes also include updated links to MBS items due to the renumbering of a significant number of MBS thoracic surgery items to reorganise those items into anatomical areas, and within each area, by increasing procedural complexity.

These changes are now updated in the AMA Fees List and are available on the Fees List website,  including PDF and CSV files for download.

The 1 July 2023 MBS changes (to Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Services) are currently under review for inclusion in a future update of the AMA Fees List. Detailed information on the MBS changes can be found in the Department of Health fact sheets and quick reference guides available on MBS Online here. Draft fees for items that are yet to be published (including Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) may be available by contacting the AMA Fees List team at feeslist@ama.com.au.
