AMA President advocating for GPs at parliament

Professor Steve Robson called on MPs and the federal government to put an end to the GP payroll tax grab unfolding in several jurisdictions.

AMA President Professor Steve Robson emphasised the role of general practice as the cornerstone of Australia’s health system at the Parliamentary Friends of General Practice breakfast on Monday.

The Parliamentary Friends of General Practice breakfast was co-hosted by independent member Dr Sophie Scamps and Labor MP Dr Gordon Reid and was attended by a range of independent and government members of parliament, AMA representatives, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and the Australian Medical Students Association.

Professor Robson praised recent federal budget investments in general practice and primary care.

He also called on MPs and the federal government to show leadership in calling for GPs to be exempt from payroll tax and for employment reform to attract more doctors to train as GPs.
