A message from the AMA President about changes to the AMA Constitution

Friday, 30 May 2025

Last night, more than 1200 members voted to support changes to the AMA Constitution at the Federal AMA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The vote was a resounding success, with more than 98 per cent of members who took part in the vote supporting the proposed changes.

We are very pleased with this result, as it shows overwhelming support for our strategic agenda and the direction set by the Federal AMA Board and leadership team.

Following last night’s vote, we can now move to appoint two independent directors to the Federal AMA Board.

This will bring us in line with many other organisations in the industry, including AMA WA, AMA South Australia, AMA Queensland, and many of the medical colleges.

Independent directors can bring a whole range of unique skills and insights to the table, bolstering our already fantastic Board. This will improve our ability to unearth new strategies to drive the AMA forward, as well as identify and manage potential risks.

We want to progress our strategic objectives in areas like finance, investment, communication, member engagement and digital transformation — and we believe finding independent directors with expertise in these areas is an important part of delivering the best possible outcome for members.

I am also happy to report three other proposed amendments to the Constitution were passed by members.

Firstly, our proposal to introduce an official handover period for the AMA President and Vice President was approved. This will ensure greater continuity and allow future presidents to enjoy the benefits of a handover period.

Secondly, members approved our proposed changes to the timeframes for appointments of the three additional members to Federal Council to align with other key appointments and elections.

Finally, members also approved our proposal to update the definition of “Official Journal” in the Constitution to reflect the many, more modern ways, we now communicate with members.

Thank you to all members who participated in this important process. We look forward to continuing this momentum as we strengthen the AMA and deliver on our strategic vision.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Danielle McMullen
