Dates: Every Friday in May, commencing from 8 May 2026

  • Day 1: Friday 8 May 2026

  • Day 4: Friday 29 May 2026 (the 4th day of the program can be attended as a standalone course).

Format: This workshop will be delivered virtually via Zoom.

Learn the fundamentals of the boardroom with the AICD-AIHE Foundations of Directorship™ Health Variant program.

Facilitated through a collaboration with the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) and the Australian Institute of Health Executives (AIHE), this four-day program provides aspiring healthcare directors with a comprehensive overview of the main components of health board directorship. 


Learning objectives

The program covers all the key areas you will need to be across as a healthcare board director, including sessions on board duties, meeting processes, finance, risk, clinical governance and strategy.
Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the duties and responsibilities of a healthcare director
  • Outline governance and board meeting processes
  • Outline the director’s role in evaluating financial statements, formulating and monitoring strategy, and identifying and assessing risk
  • Understand the director’s role in ensuring robust clinical governance across the healthcare organisation.
  • Recognise the link between corporate strategy, clinical governance and financial performance.

 

On completion of the first three days of the program, participants will receive the AICD Foundations of Directorship™ Certificate (CPD-accredited). 

On completion of the fourth day of the program, participants will receive the AIHE Clinical Governance for Board Directors Certificate (CPD-accredited).

The program is designed for new and aspiring healthcare directors, senior executives, and managers wanting to gain a foundational knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of health boards and directors. It is particularly relevant for:

  • Directors newly appointed to health boards
  • Healthcare professionals who might be interested in pursuing a career as a director
  • Healthcare executives and managers who would like a better understanding of health board processes

Pre-course work:

There is approximately 10 hours of pre-reading per course, which must be completed before the program commences.

  • The role of the Director and the Board
  • Introduction to Board Meetings and Governance

Day 2: Risk and Strategy for Directors (15 May)

  • Risk issues for Directors
  • Introduction to the Strategic Role of the Director

Day 3: Finance for Directors (22 May)

  • Introduction to Financial Statements for Directors
  • Assessing Financial Performance for Directors

Day 4: Clinical Governance for Directors (29 May)

  • Introduction to Clinical Governance for Directors
  • How to know your hospital is safe

(Please note that Day 4 can be registered for as a stand-alone course).
