AMA Queensland President speaks out on workforce challenges

Dr Nick Yim is a vocal advocate for workforce incentives to ensure all Queenslanders have the care they need.

Increasing the medical workforce remains AMA Queensland’s priority ahead of the June state budget.

The Crisafulli Government has previously acknowledged recruiting and retaining more doctors in Queensland, particularly in the regions, is the biggest challenge facing the state’s healthcare system.

AMA Queensland President Dr Nick Yim and CEO Dr Brett Dale were pleased to meet Health Minister Tim Nicholls on Wednesday 9 April to advocate for an incentive scheme to boost Queensland’s competitiveness in the medical jobs market.

We continue to call on them to reconsider their decision to scrap tiered payments of up to $70,000 to encourage doctors to work in rural and remote communities.

Dr Nick Yim featured on a WIN TV news report. Queensland Opposition Leader Steven Miles stands next to him.

On Monday 14 April, Dr Yim met with Opposition leader Steven Miles on the Sunshine Coast to again call for a financial workforce incentive scheme.

AMA Queensland believes in the importance of working closely with the Government and Opposition to ensure our message is clearly conveyed.

Until we reach optimal training levels in this state, we must have incentives in place to attract and support the best and brightest medical professionals to ensure Queenslanders get the care they need.

AMA Queensland’s Workforce Working Group is busy behind the scenes identifying other sensible solutions to our health workforce crisis, and we look forward to presenting those to government in the coming months.
