TGA rejects proposal to down schedule Sildenafil and Vardenafil

Following advocacy from the AMA and other groups, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has made an interim decision to not down schedule Sildenafil and Vardenafil so that pharmacists could supply it without a script.

The AMA strongly opposed the proposal being considered by the TGA's Advisory Committee on Medicines Scheduling to allow Vardenafil and Sildenafil to be purchased without a prescription from a pharmacist. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is not a simple health issue and is best treated with a trusted GP. A simple check list of questions posed by a pharmacist does not cover causes of ED including other prescription medicines or psychological causes.
