MJA InSight: GPs need support in providing maternity care

GPs in rural and remote areas are often the only clinician in an incredibly large region, meaning they often take responsibility for areas they are not closely familiar with. A recent article in MJA InSight has explored this topic in relation to obstetrics.

The author states that there is a lack of understanding in some health professions for the difficult space GPs occupy, with little or no appreciation of the poor outcomes that they prevent. The argument is made in MJA InSight that a well-connected and skilled GP workforce is an essential component of the maternity team and that maternity care is a core component of what general practice does.

The call for more resources is made in the article, in terms of information sharing, clinical resources and ongoing education. To read more about this topic, head to the MJA article here.
