COAG agrees to further consultation on mandatory reporting laws

The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Health Council meeting last week approved a targeted consultation process on amendments to mandatory reporting requirements by treating practitioners. This process will include the AMA, which has strongly advocated for changes to existing laws to support doctors in accessing health care.

“The targeted consultation process will seek feedback on proposed legislation that strikes a balance between ensuring health practitioners can seek help when needed, while also protecting the public from harm,” the COAG Health Council communique said.

“The consultation process will involve professional bodies representing each registered health profession, consumer groups, National Boards and professional indemnity insurers.”

The results of the targeted consultation process will inform a Bill to be presented to the Queensland Parliament as soon as possible.

Western Australia is not included in this process as its current arrangements will continue.
