AMA President talks copayments

AMA President, A/Prof Brian Owler, had a constructive meeting this week with the Prime Minister, Tony Abbott and the Minister for Health, Peter Dutton. In speaking about the meeting Professor Owler said that the Prime Minister and the Minister listened to the AMA’s concerns, and showed a willingness to work with the AMA and come up with a solution that protects vulnerable people, but supports general practice, and makes sure that we support things like preventative health care and chronic disease management.

The AMA outlined its concerns about the impacts of cutting the Medicare rebate and that the AMA can’t support this proposal.

“What we want to do is work with the Government to come up with a model that not only promotes health care and promotes the health of our patients, but it protects those that are most vulnerable, and also looks after the interests of our members and doctors that are serving the public.”
