AMA fights proposed takeover of medical training
A proposal to create a new, separate accreditation board, overseen by the nation’s Health Ministers, for all health education and training in Australia is “seriously concerning”, Dr Gannon says.
The draft report of the review of accreditation within the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (NRAS) recommends putting the content of every course across 14 health sectors under the control of the new agency.
Dr Gannon said that taking responsibility for course content from doctor-driven national medical boards would hand control of both health workforce planning and standards to governments, a combination that could be mishandled or misused.
“At its most extreme, you can have governments fixing workforce problems by reducing standards,” he told The Weekend Australian.
The final report is due to be presented to the Australian Health Ministers Advisory Council by November 30.
