The AMA Let’s Talk About Fees campaign – aimed at significantly improving Australia’s rate of informed financial consent – entered its second stage in August 2006 with educational materials being distributed to every doctor around the country.
The campaign Lets Talk About Fees is as simple as that – talking. We want doctors to inform their patients of the cost of care they will be providing, and we want the patients to ask doctors about the fees and costs. It’s a two way street.
The eye-catching blue posters, brochures and pads doctors received with the 21 August 2006 edition of Australian Medicine are not for filing, they are for doctors to read, understand, and share with patients.

Brochure
It’s good form to inform and be informed. We’d like to see this brochure in waiting rooms of doctors, retail centres for private health funds, and private hospitals to provide patients and the broader community with information that encourages them to start the dialogue about fees with their doctor.

Pad
This simple one page handout is ideally suited for GPs to give patients along with their referral to see the surgeon, or other specialist. Simply titled ‘8 questions to ask your doctor about costs before you go to hospital’ it is an easy to read reference that both doctors and patients can use to talk about fees.

Poster
This poster highlights the basic message of the AMA Let’s Talk About Fees campaign. We want doctors to talk to patients about the cost of care they will be providing, and we want patients to talk to doctors about the fees and costs.
Every doctor in Australia received this poster at the end of August, via Australian Medicine, to display in his or her waiting room.
