Guidelines for Implementing Flexibility

The AMA has led the field with respect to raising the awareness about the need for doctors to be able to have a better balance between their work and personal lives. The changing demographics and values of the medical workforce mean that the profession must move with the times.

Patient care will always be the highest priority, however, that does not preclude strategies to allow for more flexible working arrangements for the medical workforce.

In consultation with the AMA Council of Doctors-in-Training, the Coordinating Committee of Salaried Doctors, and AMA state/territory Branches, the AMA has put together an excellent generic resource kit to help doctors who are seeking more flexible work arrangements. This includes a Guide for Doctors and a Guide for Management. Both have been designed so that they can be tailored to suit the needs of an individual hospital or unit.

In their generic form, they will provide useful advice and guidance to doctors and employers alike.
