The AMA worked closely with the Federal Government to clarify when obstetric services would qualify under the new Medicare Safety Net.

Obstetrics - Planning and Management of a Pregnancy - Item 16590 (previously 15999)

The outcome was the creation of a new MBS item (previously 15999, now 16590) for planning and management of pregnancy that came into effect on 6 September 2004.  The new item is a designated outpatient number so attracts benefits under the Safety Net. The new item is charged once by the obstetrician after 20 weeks of pregnancy, instead of one routine antenatal visit (item 16500) and carries an MBS fee of $110.

To assist practitioners to understand the different situations under which the new item applies a list of Frequently Asked Questions is attached.

Note:  Where you read 15999 in the attached files now read 16590.
