New genetics and genomics guide to assist GPs

GPs with patients that have an interest in genomic and genetic medicine will likely be interested in a new guide on genetics and genomics. The guide supports GPs to remain abreast of developments, assisting them to provide up-to-date information to their patients.

Genomics in general practice offers practical summaries and key information for GPs who are managing common genetic conditions and issues of testing in primary care. The guide was released by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and covers a range of issues in genomic and genetic medicine that have received burgeoning interest from patients when visiting their GP, including:

  • Family history
  • Personal genomic testing
  • Genetic counselling
  • Diabetes
  • Mental health conditions
  • Newborn screening
  • Prenatal testing
  • Reproductive carrier screening
