AMA 15th National Conference 2003 - AMA Youth Health Award

A Sydney woman has taken out the AMA's inaugural Youth Health Award for her outstanding support of young mothers.

The award presented by AMA President Dr Kerryn Phelps recognises the contribution young people make to the health of their peers and stems from the AMA/Commonwealth Bank Youth Health Advocate Program.

Award winner Rahnia Mackey helped establish a young mothers' group for 15 to 24 year old women - a service, participants say, is a lifesaver for its friendship and practical advice.

Rhania is also a regular speaker at King George Hospital's under-20s antenatal clinic.

Dr Phelps applauds Rhania for her outstanding contribution to the health and wellbeing of young mothers and their children, who often face barriers when accessing adequate health services.
