AMA welcomes Government's $30 million for I.T.

The AMA welcomes the $30 million dollars the Government is directing to general practitioners to improve the application of information technology in their practices.

"There is no doubt that the impressive uptake of IT in general practice has been of benefit to both the Government and the profession," said Dr David Rivett, Chair of the AMA's Council of General Practice.

"There is, however, a need to progress the application of IT in general practice, particularly against agreed standards," Dr Rivett said.

"The AMA understands that the funds are being provided to Practice Incentive Program accredited practices and will be subject to normal auditing procedures.

"A second payment is planned in late 2004.

"The AMA maintains its long held view that information technology offers solutions to improve the ability of GPs to manage the administrative and financial management of their practices.

"In this context, the AMA looks forward to working with Government to develop clear criteria for the second payment of this initiative to be delivered to general practitioners in the second half of 2004.

"The AMA looks forward to working with the Government on the red tape issues," Dr Rivett said.
