AMA 15th National Conference 2003 Medical Indemnity Task force wins AMA President's Award at National Conference 2003

The AMA's Medical Professional Indemnity Taskforce was tonight honoured with the prestigious AMA President's Award.

The Award goes annually to people who the AMA President considers have achieved something out of the ordinary for the medical profession and the broader community over the year.

AMA President, Dr Kerryn Phelps, said the Task Force - Dr Michael Sedgley (Vic), Mr Laurie Pincott (NSW), Dr Chris Cain (SA), Dr Bill Glasson (Qld), Dr Peter Garcia-Webb (WA), Dr Andrew Pesce (NSW), Dr Russell Stitz (Qld) and Dr Nick Little (NSW) - had enabled the AMA to achieve the politically impossible.

"They have turned a so-called unsolvable problem into a Federal Government priority," Dr Phelps said.

"Their efforts have established the AMA as the "brains trust" of medical indemnity in this country.

"Their hard work and diligence have provided security, certainty and confidence to a system that will now allow their medical colleagues to continue practising.

"The very real concern that many Australian communities could lose their doctors has been eased because of the AMA's work in lobbying the Government to provide further guarantees on medical indemnity.

"The work of the Task Force will span generations," Dr Phelps said.
