Your privacy at risk – what can you do about it?

This legislation has not yet been passed. There is still time to have your concerns heard. Sign the petition in your doctors practice. Write to or email the Health Minister and the Minister for Human Services. Call or write to you your local member. Help them to understand that doctor/patient conversations need to be private.

If you’d care to leave a comment below, the AMA will also endeavour to pass your views to the people in control of this process.

The encouraging news is that when this was last attempted, back in 1993, the Parliament quickly refused to allow bureaucrats access to patient records, then went a step further by passing legislation that specifically protected your privacy.

Patient Records Privacy

I don't see the necessity for Medicare to access patient's clinical information - doctors records are already scrutinised by the accreditation process and there is already provision for Medicare to investigate doctors under suspicion through the PPS Review. Patients are entitled to remain confident that their medical records cannot randomly become public property.

Communication Privacy issue to Patients

In the busy practice and consultation we need a concise explanation to give to patients to inform them about the govt. proposals. A single sheet explanation from AMA will asist staff and doctors to ensure that patients appreciate the problem without the need for individual protracted discussion. AMA cannot expect staff or doctors to take time out of a busy day to do this. One sheet explanation I can print out, have a stach at the front desk, and give all patient is what is needed. Only then will signing a petition becomes achievable. A single page well informed sheet is the least the AMA can prepare for us and we will get the signatures. This issue warrants the little extra effort otherwise a new pressure and threat against medical practice and patient privacy will get dumpted on all doctors as a matter of routine. We have had enough already.

Dr-Patient Confidentiality

This is happening in the US as well. I think its part of the UN trying to force us into a global health system. Congressman Dr Ron Paul (Texas) has written a Bill to the American Congress to try and have the same thing stopped there as well. This is SO wrong I can hardly find the words.

Protect my privacy

I am appalled that the Government is considering providing access, in any form, to my confidential medical records. I do not want my records to be open for others to view. It has taken a long time for me to trust my practitioner and if my discussions with them are going to be made public I will not be comfortable discussing private matters. Please reconsider this proposal, providing access to our medical records is not the answer.
